Low FODMAP and Supplements
Many people with IBS follow a low-FODMAP diet, often with a dietitian. Some supplements add FODMAPs back in without people noticing.
Supplements that contain FODMAPs
- Inulin / FOS and chicory root fiber are fructans, one of the main FODMAP groups.[PubMed]
- Many gummies and "prebiotic" blends contain inulin, FOS or sugar alcohols. Check the label.
Fibers people on low FODMAP discuss more often
PHGG (Sunfiber), psyllium and acacia come up most often in low-FODMAP discussions. Tolerance varies, so start small.
Enzymes
- Lactase enzyme supplies the enzyme people with lactose intolerance make too little of.[NIDDK] It only helps with lactose.
- Alpha-galactosidase (Beano) breaks down the sugars in beans, peas and lentils, foods the NIDDK lists among common causes of gas.[NIDDK]
- Digestive enzyme blends (including fructan-targeted products) are among the higher-rated groups in our data.
